Dear Cherie,
Tor seems to have a new browser bundle that doesn't allow the above steps anymore? You don't need to install TOR anymore for example, and it doesn't seem to have the torcc file anymore. Any ideas on this? Have been using your tips for the past 3 years, one of the best discoveries on the web! :)

Ive been checking out loads of the different sites, the free or cheaper ones only seem to work half the time and slow. The cheapest one I trialled that seemed to work fast enough with iplayer and ITV player was http://watchiplayer.net

Freebie services just dont seem to be fast enough for the players now. The best thing to do is check out of the different vpn/proxy services out there before you buy. have a look on http://www.vpn-guide.com

Most popular shows on iplayer do find their way onto torrents now fortunately. I use a VPN connection outside of the UK to watch iplayer, it works fine, rarely buffers. http://www.laptoptelly.com is the one I use, but there literally dozens out there. I used this one as its British run.

You probably try editing it through the user interface. I ran across the same problem. It's a bug with the program. You can't edit it using the UI. Instead, open the file manually in a text editor and edit it by hand, then restart the application.

Howdy Cherie,

This has worked wonderfully for me for a while. Unfortunately, Step 11 suddenly stopped working a few months ago - it no longer makes a connection. IExplorer and other programs that run through IE just can't connect to anything while the settings are as they are in Step 11. I don't suppose you or anyone here has dealt with this and maybe found a way to fix it?

I am getting an error code when I try to edit the torcc file. it says error at line 1: "". I am typing it out just like in the example in step 3. Please assist.

Expat sheilds far too slow for streaming over here, i tried the www.laptoptelly.com trial thing, works ok.
i think you need good connection to stream via free vpn

I got tor running. My pc then died and could not be bothered to get tor going again.

used the proxy service below instead. If you want to get watching BBC etc in a few moments and you do not have a science degree then this is for you, just takes a few moments to change settings in browser and BBC all working really great. Its $10 a month but worth it ...

I just use a paid vpn, I got mine from hidemynet.com for only $5 a month and I have different types of vpn to choose from depending on what I need speed and security.

This is correct, the comments will be removed. You can ignore that warning, because comments are informative and do not matter for executing the program.

The rename to torrc.orig1 is a means of helping you recover in case you break something when editing. You can then remove the file and rename torrc.orig1 to the original filename and Tor will work again the way it did before you made the edits.

Perhaps you configured Firefox wrong?

Firefox won't JUST become German unless you have fiddled with the settings.

Okay. Go to Options - Content and click on the "Choose" button by the Languages section.

Now, make sure that the US English and the UK English languages are over the German language. Don't use the other English dialects, as many sites will only recognize the US English and the UK English.

I learned that the hard way as sites like Facebook and YouTube mysteriously started to show in Japanese (I had South African English at the top).

Look at the post carefully and you'll see what he meant.

He meant that the IP address's reported country of origin keeps switching between the UK and a different country.

When he said it "flashes to a UK location", he meant that when he pressed the refresh button, the IP address changed the reported country of origin to the UK when it reported a different one beforehand.

Doesn't make that much sense, coming to think about it. Maybe his software's configured to have a a dynamic IP address?

Well, for starters, it's considered illegal by many governments in the world including the US and the UK.

Also, some companies have been known to patrol bittorrent networks and gather IP addresses of all who download (and distribute, as the nature of p2p networks makes everyone who downloads from it also distribute chunks to others to make their downloads go fast) their content and sent Cease and Desist letters to them which may or not have consequences as it ALSO goes through to your ISP (who may or may not have terms prohibiting that). Magnet links, which has replaced bittorrent links in many sites like Pirate Bay, makes it harder to do this, but notice that I said HARDER (ie it's still possible to do this). No system is completely safe.

Watching from Hulu.com or Iplayer, on the other hand, is more legal, as they actually got permission to do what they're doing. The only reason why they don't let people from other countries watch them is because of the terms and conditions of doing what they're doing prohibiting them from doing it.

Note that I'm not Condemning you or tying to tell you to stop. I'm just pointing out the truth and why some people are maybe doing this.

I'm having a problem with step 3 because I can't figure out how to configure a file on a mac. It lets me into the file, but then it says that "
